If you prefer an oar or paddle trip, but aren't
sure you can spare two weeks, a partial trip might be
right for you. In making this decision, it is important to
be aware of the Bright Angel Trail. In addition to your regular workout,
additional physical conditioning and consistent exercise prior to this hike is essential.
This is a serious hike.
The two week full canyon
trip is divided into upper and lower "halves".
If you choose to do a partial trip, your trip will begin or end
with a hike on the Bright Angel Trail; 4,500 vertical feet.
A hike out following the 6 or 7-day
(upper canyon) trip or a hike into the 8, 9 or 10-day
(lower canyon) trip requires the demanding and arduous 7.5
mile ascent or descent of the Bright Angel Trail.
A sleeping bag, sleeping pad and tent and will be packed for you
on the boats prior to your hike.
However, you must hike with your own personal belongings. The mule
duffle service provided by Xanterra Parks and Resorts is not an option.
Be sure to review the Hiking Tips located at the bottom of this page.
The above photo shows the
river and a portion of the Bright Angel Trail.
Imagine carrying a 20 pound
pack (plus an additional 10 pounds of water), hiking in 100 degree heat,
climbing to the top of the Empire State
Building four times, and sustaining the
effort for 6+ hours. It would be wise to consider a different
option, such as a full Canyon non-motorized hybrid or a
motor trip, if you are more than a little overweight,
have a heart condition, joint injuries,
history of heat related illnesses, asthma,
or fear of heights.
If you are serious about doing this hike, make sure you have time to
get into shape. The hike is quite beautiful and many guests
often feel a personal sense of accomplishment after the hike.
However, in reflection, many of our
guests often wish they had taken the full trip. For additional photos and
information regarding the Bright Angel Trail, check out the
National Park Service web page on the Bright Angel Trail.
